Alepoc offers engine parts for vintage cars of all brands. And in our parts from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, we have many references for the Peugeot. In fact, the range Peugeot from those years showed real evolution and certain modernization... while still using the same technical foundations. We revisit the evolution of the 203, the 403, and finally arrive at the 404.

The 203, the first modern post-war car for Peugeot

Like most French manufacturers, the restart of automobile production by Peugeot After the Second World War is difficult. The range is reduced to a single model: the 202, which appeared in 1938.

But in 1947 Peugeot reveals its 203 to its dealers and the press. Intended to be as powerful as a 11CV while being a 10CV, the new car clearly targets the Citroën Traction. It introduces a 1290 cm³ engine with three bearings developing 42 hp. It is a rear-wheel drive with a (fragile) 4-speed non-synchronized gearbox.

Its official launch took place at the Paris Motor Show in 1948. Production began shortly after, but restrictions due to reconstruction meant that the pace was very slow… even though the capacity of the lines was 300 cars per day !

The Peugeot The 203 will undergo numerous developments. In terms of its range, a station wagon, a commercial vehicle, a pickup, a coupe, and a convertible will complement the sedan. Additionally, successive facelifts will differentiate the various years. The grille, bumpers, and interior will be updated.

On the other hand, the mechanics evolve very little. It wasn't until 1953 that the pistons changed, offering 3 more horsepower.
In fact, the biggest development comes in 1955. Peugeot The 403 is released with a new gearbox that the 203 will also benefit from. Renamed the 203 C, as opposed to the 203 A, it will remain in the catalog alongside its "big sister" until 1960. A total of 699,863 units will be produced !

The 403, new line and technical developments

In 1955 Peugeot thus unveiled the 403. A new car, with a design partially developed by Pinin Farina, the sedan stands out from the 203 with its three-box body style.

On the technical side, the recipe from its predecessor is retained with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive architecture, and gear shifts on the steering wheel. These gear shifts are due to a new transmission that delivers the power from the "new" engine.

In fact, the 1468 cm³ uses the engine block from the 203. They simply increased its displacement and equipped it with a new cylinder head. The power then reaches 58 hp.

The Peugeot The 403 will also receive a full range with a station wagon, a commercial variant, and a convertible. It will also undergo minor stylistic changes throughout its career.

Peugeot 403-7

But where some 403 models come closest to the 203 is with the arrival of the 403-7 model, with 7 fiscal horsepower, in 1960. It actually replaces the 203 by adopting its 1290 cm³ engine while keeping the 1468 cylinder head. In terms of finish, it is truly an entry-level model with minimal decoration and reduced equipment.

In 1960 Peugeot also launched the successor to the 403 with the 404. However, this does not prevent the 403 from remaining in the lineup, as it is cheaper than the new model. It will be produced until 1966 and will be the first car in the history of the lion to exceed one million units. The counter will stop at 1.214.126 copies.

The Peugeot 404, a true leap towards modernity

When Peugeot unveils its 404 at the Paris Motor Show in 1960, and modernity is already reflected in its lines. Pinin Farina was once again called upon... and this design is actually derived from other drawings by the Italian firm.

Here again, continuity is maintained at the technical level: propulsion, front engine, and a 4-speed gearbox operated from the steering wheel. However, the engine is truly new. The initial 1618 cm³ with three bearings produces 65 horsepower.
Once again, a true lineup will support the sedan with a station wagon, limousine, coupe, convertible, and commercial limousine.

This is a stripped-down car, intended for craftsmen, and it uses the engine... from the 403, upgraded to 68 hp. In fact, it won't be the only one to do so, since, with the discontinuation of the 403, Peugeot produced the 404-8 in 1968 and 1969. The formula is the same as for the 403-7, with a stripped-down finish and a more rustic engine.

However, the 404 will truly mark the entry of Peugeot in another technical area. From 1962, the cars could be equipped with fuel injection. And in 1964, the engine finally switched to 5 bearings. It would also serve as the basis for the engines of the 504, which would appear in 1968.

The Peugeot 404 will have a long career. The last sedans will roll off the production lines in 1975, while the commercial versions will be produced until 1979! There, the counter will stop at 2.885.377 copies.
