The Citroën Type H is, along with the Renault Estafette , one of the symbols of old utility vehicles. Often confused with the TUB, which was its predecessor between 1939 and 1941, the Type H appeared after World War II. Its name is not innovative since it was its internal project code at Citroën.
Like the TUB, it is a revolutionary utility vehicle because it uses front-wheel drive for movement. Another advantage is that in the absence of a drive shaft, the rear floor can be lower, thus freeing up usable space... or height for the merchant to stand up.
In 1948, its engine was that of the TUB, a 1628 cc gasoline engine. The front axle was borrowed from the Citroën Traction 15, the steering wheel, mirrors, and door handles were also borrowed from the chevron sedan. It is noticeable with its corrugated sheet metal, chosen because it offers more rigidity to the body. The left rear side features a sliding door and an awning, very useful for itinerant merchants who park along the roads.
The Evolution of the Citroën Type H
It continued to evolve, receiving the engine from the Traction 11 in 1953 and then the reversed carburetor engine from the 11D in 1955. A Perkins diesel was offered starting in 1960. Later, the windshield became a single piece, and in 1968 the Citroën Type H received the dashboard of the Citroën Ami 6 and swapped its Perkins diesel for an Indenor.
The last unit was produced in 1981. In total, 473,289 units were produced over 33 years of its career!
Nowadays, Type H vehicles are still used daily, popular with food trucks, and they are also one of the stars at classic vehicle gatherings.
