The history of the Citroën Dyane begins in the early 60s, Citroën launched the study of a new car intended to replace the Citroën 2CV. The goal was to regain commercial ground as the Renault 4 had impacted the "deuche." However, they did not target the 4cv segment, occupied by the Citroën Ami 6.

The Transformations of the Citroën Dyane

Once again, parts from the brand's parts bank will be used to save on production costs. Thus, the 425 cm³ engine from the 2CV will be reused along with part of its assembly lines. Aimed clearly at Renault , the new car will feature a hatchback. The interior is new but follows the main ideas of the 2CV.
The design is handled by Panhard, which has just been acquired by Citroën. It features round headlights, but their casing makes them appear square. It also stands out with concave doors that strengthen the body.

For the name, we once again draw from Panhard, which had already registered the name Dyane. Production starts in August 1967 but quickly evolves. The Citroën Dyane 6 arrives in 1968 with a 602 cm³ engine, more powerful and borrowed from the Ami. Meanwhile, the 425 becomes 435 cm³, also offering better performance.

The Citroën Dyane, A Bigger Success Than the 2 CV

The Citroën Dyane sells twice as well as the 2CV and is poised to succeed it. However, the adoption of the 602 cm³ engine in the latter boosts its sales. The Dyane will remain in the catalog until 1983 and will have been produced in 1.4 million units, not counting the Acadiane vans which replaced the 2CV vans!

Like the 2CV, the Dyane is still seen on our roads, and not just in the hands of collectors! It’s an interesting alternative to the 2CV, allowing one to stand out while still retaining the charm of the small Citroën in terms of driving experience.
