Against the advice of Louis Renault, the engineers of the diamond prepared a new car during World War II. The boss did not believe in small popular cars, and even the Juvaquatre launched in 1938 did not have his favor. The first prototypes were ready, but it was necessary to wait until the end of the war for the studies to be completed.

 

The Renault 4 CV after the war

In 1947, the production of the Renault 4CV finally started, once the factories and machines were rebuilt. It was the first new post-war car for the brand, which at the time only had the Renault Juvaquatre station wagon in its catalog. The first cars had teething problems, which did not help the production of the "mottes de beurre," a nickname given to the car due to its shape. Technically, it was distinguished by an all-new engine: the famous 760 cm³ Billancourt 4-cylinder placed at the rear. With overhead valves, it produced 17hp, providing sufficient performance for the small popular car.

 

The fame of the Renault 4 CV

The Renault 4CV had a great career. In 1949, it was the very first rear-engine car to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans! In 1950, its engine was upgraded to 747 cm³, and the R1063 version appeared as the sporty model of the range, leading Renault's commitment to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At that time, 350 cars were produced each day, and the 4CV was the best-selling car in France, maintaining this status until 1955. The 4CV was exported to the USA and even produced under license in Japan!
The appearance of the Dauphine did not hinder its sales, and it only ended its career in 1961, just before Renault released the 4L (link). In total, 1,105,457 cars were produced at the Billancourt plant.
